As people's collective knowledge continues to grow and evolve, many studies have turned to food and the way it affects our bodies. The Mediterranean diet, and specifically one of its fundamental pillars, olive oil, comes highly recommended for its metabolic health benefits. Olive oil is widely recognized for improving cardiovascular and metabolic health with steady use, and one new study dives deeper into its effects on the human brain.
The study followed more than 650 participants over two years. Participants were between 55 and 75 years old, and all had pre-existing risk factors: they were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome. The study sought to answer two questions: Does regular olive oil consumption support the gut microbiome diversity linked to changes in cognitive function? And do the results differ depending on the oil's quality (virgin or refined)?
Extra Virgin Olive Oil was shown to increase the diversity in the gut microbiome, preserving cognitive function in participants.
